I would recommend two volumes in the recent Gill and Macmillan series:
NINETEENTH CENTURY IRELAND by D. George Boyce; and TWENTIETH CENTURY
IRELAND by Dermot Keogh. I personally believe it would be a mistake
to assign Foster as the text assumes much knowledge on the part of any
student without prior background in the subject. I would also argue its
revisionist thread, while useful at another level, would be
counterproductive at the level you describe.
