7) Position: Interdisciplinary Humanities/History
Institution: University of Hartford
Location: Connecticut

The College of Arts and Sciences at the University of Hartford is
starting a search for an exciting and unusual appointment, a scholar-
teacher in interdisciplinary humanities, with a strong emphasis on
history. The position has been created in part as an eventual
replacement for Professor Bill Brayfield, a distinguished teacher of
European history, whose interests range widely into other disciplines.
While the primary focus of the position may be within the department of
History, the person sought will definitely have links with one or more
cognate disciplines. These include Philosophy, Anthropology, Modern
Languages, Cultural Studies, Literature, Art History, Afro-American
Studies, Rhetoric, Anthropology, Cinema, Gender Studies and others, and
the exact department(s) in which the person appointed will depend on his
or her qualifications. The rank is open, but such an appointment would
likely to be at the Associate Professor level, though an Assistant
Professorship, even a starting position, is a possibility, depending on
the suitability of the candidate, and his or her potential to
contribute to the College's intellectual life.

Such a person would have excellent scholarly achievements or potential,
and would also be strongly committed to teaching, pedagogy, innovative
curricula, and to cross-disciplinary connections. The College is
strongly committed to the importance of history and historical awareness
in undergraduate education. The College has a Center for the Humanities,
an endowed Chair in the teaching of the Humanities, a well endowed
Judaic Studies Center, a tradition of innovative pedagogy, and an active
and well funded focus on interactive media instruction. Departments in
the Humanities include English; Cinema Theater Arts & Art History;
History; International Languages and Cultures; Rhetoric, Language &
Culture; Philosophy. A School of Communication within the College
includes both humanities and Social Sciences perspectives. New major
programs in Professional and Technical Writing, Cinema, and
International Studies have just been mounted. The humanities departments
contribute significantly to the University's nationally prominent
interdisciplinary general education program, the All-University
Curriculum, in which the successful candidate would be considered for a
joint appointment.

The University of Hartford is an EO/AAA employer, and the College
strongly encourages women and minority candidates to apply. Commencing
date would be Spring 1996.

Please direct inquiries to Gary Waller, Dean, College of Arts and
Sciences, University of Hartford, West Hartford, CT 06117.
