This morning (February 22, 1995) the House Appropriations
Subcommittee on the Interior, chaired by Ralph Regula (R-OH),
approved a rescission package which included cuts in this current
year (Fiscal Year 1995) appropriations for the National Endowment
for the Arts and the National Endowment for the Humanities.
Despite some eloquence on behalf of the programs from former
chair Sidney Yates (D-IL), the vote was 6-3 to cut each endowment
by $5 million, or about 3%. The rescission package will now go
to the full Appropriations Committee for consideration, then to
the House and Senate and White House.
