I am wondering if any on this list could help me with a problem. I am
having some difficulty locating a good historical overview of the smuggling
trade in eigtheenth century Britain and Scotland. More specifically, what I am
looking for is information on legal responses to smuggling from about 1770
to 1790 in the Scottish lowlands. The category of goods being smuggled is
less important.
Please note, I don't need original sources per se. I've already
combed through Gentlemen's Mag, the Annual Register, the Parliamentary
History and even some of the Statutes at Large. What I do need is a broader
view, and so far the few books on smuggling I've managed to track down
have been, to say the least, less than satisfying.
Feel free to contact me in private or on the list. Any help would
be greatly appreciated.
