================= DATABASES POSTING =================
Allow me to introduce myself.
I am currently undertaking a Ph.D. at the University of Hull (under the
supervision of Dr. Andrew Ayton) based on various aspects of
fourteenth-century English local government, but focussing on the sheriff.
One of my aims has been to continue the process of computerisation, begun
by Dr. Ayton, of various local government and related records in order to
emphasise national trends, rather than concentrating on local studies which
seem to have proliferated recently.
This amount of data requires a computer or two!
While the data are not specifically economic in nature, and are geared more
towards prosopographical analysis, it would be rather idiotic to ignore
the connection between land/wealth and involvement in local government.
Consequently the existing datasets incorporate both lists of appointees
(sheriffs, escheators, etc..) and estate-related material for a sample of
local officials. Projected databases include a selection of lay subsidy
returns, a tentative list of retaining connections, and a list of those
distrained for knighthood. The existing files are in a PARADOX (DOS)
format, a program which I have found to be highly flexible.
As an aside, this type of discussion list is an excellent idea. I have
often wondered how many lost souls are out there, isolated in the void of
historical computing!
Yours,
Richard Gorski.
