I saw Brian Friel's play "Translations" in Boston (bound for Broadway, I
am sure). It is set in Donegal in the 1830s and the action revolves
around British army engineers renaming Gaelic places with English
equivalents. Could anyone suggest a good sources for the "translation" of
Irish names for English? And what criteria were used?
