Thanks largely to the indefatigable work of Henry Snyder,
the online ESTC has been a reality for several years, as a
special database within RLIN (the Research Libraries
Information Network). RLIN is a fee-for-service
bibliographic database accessible mostly through academic
libraries and the like (although I believe it is possible to
have a private account). Access can be via Telnet and
Gopher.

Lately the scope of ESTC has been broadened, with an eye
toward creating a unified database containing records from
the entire handpress period for England, Ireland, Scotland,
Wales, British America, etc. To that end, records from the
Pollard & Redgrave STC (1475-1640) and Wing STC (1641-1700)
are being added to the ESTC database. Moreover, a microfilm
company called Research Publications (aka RP) has begun a
project to film the ESTC titles, to parallel the work done by
UMI for the Pollard & Redgrave and Wing titles.
