H-Net Guide to CARL February 12, 1995

Tables of contents of 20,000 journals are available FREE to
Internet users from "CARL." It covers most scholarly
journals for last 3-5 years, and includes some foreign
language titles as well.

you need to be able to TELNET---if you have email you
probably have TELNET as well.
step-by-step procedure:

telnet DATABASE.CARL.ORG

1. enter 5 (= vt100 terminal, most common type) enter enter
2. enter 1 (you want to get to UNCOVER)
3. hit ENTER 4 times [go back later & fill out forms for REVEAL
service]
4. CARL is menu driven. Pay attention to the options listed at
the bottom of your screen.
5. get the MAIN MENU:
N = search for name of author of an article
W = search for words in the title
B = select name of journal; Browse through table of contents
6. enter B and enter name of journal
--when the cover sheet comes up, you can enter REVEAL and
you will get a free subscription to the table of contents.
Whenever a new TOC for this journal appears, it will be
emailed to you! CARL makes money by selling fax copies of
articles for about $10 each, but that service is optional.
--when cover sheet comes up, enter E to examine tables of
contents for that journal for last 3-6 years
7. from Main Menu, experiment with N and W searches
8. to quit, go back to Carl main menu, enter //EXIT
