1. Italy: Bologna Chair
Department of Politics, Institutions, and History, University of Bologna.
Three months, starting 2/97.
Specialty: American political or intellectual history, American political
theory, or comparative political systems. The University also
has broad interest in 20th-century political theories and
political philosophy.
Assignment: It is expected the grantee will teach one or two seminars for
third- and fourth-year students in the history and politics
major. Research opportunities are available in history of
political theory, political philosophy, Italian political
science, contemporary Italian history, and history of European
political parties. Lecturing is in English.
2. Italy: Florence Chair
Department of Political and Social Sciences, European University Institute,
Florence.
Three months, between 10/96 and 5/97. Exact dates will be negotiated
between the university and the grantee.
Specialty: The Chair will normally rotate between four different departments
at the E.U.I.: Political and Social Sciences, Economics, History
and Civilization, and Law. The desired specialty is expected to
shift accordingly. For 1996-97 the host department is Political
and Social Sciences. The designated area is political science
and international relations.
Assignment: The grantee will lecture at the graduate level on the area of
specialization, advise doctoral students, and participate in
seminars. Grantee will lecture in the following key subject
areas encompassed by the department: (1) European comparative
research (political institutions and behavior; social and
political groups and movements; comparative policy making); (2)
European integration and its international context (the politics
of European integration; international relations and
international political economy); (3) political theory. Lecturing
in English.
3. Italy: Trento Chair
University of Trento
Three months, between 3/97 and 5/97.
Specialty: Law faculty at Trento specialize in comparative and transnational
law. Specializations in which they are interested include
constitutional law, legal theory and jurisprudence, torts,
procedure property, business. There is no priority, but there is
a desire to cover (over the years) a number of legal sub-fields
pertaining to the U.S. legal system.
Applicants should have a degree in legal studies (or in some
circumstances, political science), ten years of teaching
experience at undergraduate level or four years at graduate level,
and full professorship. Some knowledge of continental legal
systems preferred.
Assignment: The grantee will lecture at advanced level with some seminars at
graduate and doctoral level. There is some tutoring related to
students' individual research work. Lecturing is in English,
though some knowledge of Italian is helpful.
4. Sweden: The Uppsala Chair in American Studies
The Swedish Institute for North American Studies (SINAS) Uppsala University
Nine months, starting early September 1996.
Specialty: American Studies with a preference in 1996-97 for American
politics. The grant will rotate in yearly cycles between American
politics, American history, and American literature. Applicants
should be scholar-teachers who have several years of teaching
experience at both the graduate and undergraduate levels. There
is a preference for applicants who are interested in
interdisciplinary studies and who view American politics from a
comparative perspective.
Assignment: The Swedish Institute for North American Studies was established
in 1985 and is a research institute with three main objectives:
to conduct and promote research in American studies; to
coordinate the efforts of scholars in varying American Studies
disciplines; and to arrange courses, lectures, and conferences on
related topics.
The assignment includes teaching an introductory course for
advanced undergraduates as well as a more specialized course for
graduates on topics in the grantee's area of expertise. Teaching
load is about 2 hours per week. Introductory class will be
around 20-30 students; graduate seminar will be around 6-15
students. All teaching is in English. Grantee will meet with
and supervise students about 2 hours per week and is expected to
give an inaugural lecture at the beginning of the first term.
Grantee will also have the possibility to represent the institute
through guest lecturing and seminar participation at other
Swedish universities. Primarily a lectureship but will have
possibilities for conducting research if desired.
5. Netherlands: John Adams Chair American History (Senior Scholars Only)
The Fulbright Commission in Amsterdam will arrange affiliation with the
most appropriate department at one of five Dutch universities.
Four months, beginning 9/96 or 1/97.
Specialty: American history.
Assignment: Teach advanced undergraduate courses and graduate seminars and
provide general lectures. Limited supervision of graduate
theses and consultation on curriculum is expected. The
chairholder may be invited to give occasional guest lectures at
other Dutch universities. Lecturing is in English.
6. Netherlands: Thomas Jefferson Chair [Junior or Senior Scholars]
The Fulbright Commission in Amsterdam will arrange affiliation with the
most appropriate department at one of five Dutch universities.
Four months, beginning 9/96 or 1/97.
Specialty: A variety of social science disciplines within American studies
will be considered, including historical or contemporary American
history, law, economics, or political science.
Assignment: Teach undergraduate and graduate courses and provide general
lectures. Limited supervision of graduate theses and
consultation on curriculum is expected. The chairholder may be
invited to give occasional guest lectures at other Dutch
universities. Lecturing is in English.
7. Germany: Distinguished Chair in American Studies
Host institution to be chosen by German Fulbright Commission in
consultation with grantee.
One or two academic semesters, beginning 9/96.
Specialty: American history, political science or American social sciences.
Subjects: American history, political science or American social sciences
with exact field open.
Assignment: Graduate teaching. Lectures at other German institutions and
possible outreach activities.
8. Canada: Fulbright-University of Calgary Chair in North American Studies
University of Calgary
6 months, beginning 1/97.
Specialty: Preference for 1996-97 is for a scholar in a field of
contemporary American social science research dealing
with North American studies.
Subjects: Contemporary American social science research with exact
field open.
Assignment: Graduate and undergraduate teaching.
9. Canada: Bissell-Fulbright Chair in Canadian/American Relations
University of Toronto--Centre for International Studies
9 months, beginning 9/96.
Specialty: Preference for 1996-97 is for a scholar in a field of
contemporary American social science research dealing with
Canadian-American relations.
Subjects: Contemporary American social science research with exact
field open.
Assignment: Graduate and undergraduate teaching, seminar presentations,
and cooperative research with other scholars in the Institute.

1. Hungary - John Marshall Chair
The Chair-holder will be affiliated with the Department of Political
Science at the Budapest University of Economics or at another Hungarian
higher educational institution. Due to the high interest of potential
Hungarian host institutions, additional tasks at universities/colleges other
than the host institution or rotation of the Chair between Hungarian
institutions may be needed.
The award is for one academic year (10 months), beginning September 1996, or
for one semester (5 months), beginning September 1996 or February 1997. The
scholar will be expected to make a one-week preliminary visit to Hungary to
discuss with host institution officials and faculty the needs and interests
of the institution, the content and schedule of courses, availability of
textbooks and other teaching materials, library and other support facilities,
housing options, etc.
Specialty: The grantee should be a senior scholar with an outstanding record
of teaching and writing on U.S. political institutions. The
scholar should also have a background in comparative political
systems that will enable him to relate the U.S. political system
to political theories that are more familiar to Hungarian
students. The scholar should be able to adapt his teaching to
the needs and interests of students of diverse backgrounds.
Lectures may be given in English. Some knowledge of Hungarian
will be advantageous for professional and social contacts.
Subjects: The Chair-holder will teach a full-year course on U.S.
government, politics, and political institutions for fourth- and
fifth-year students at the host institution. The scholar will
also teach one or more advanced courses or faculty seminars in
his/her specialty at the host and possibly at other institutions
and will serve as a consultant to the institution in the
development of its Political Science education.
