First let me introduce myself as the new Executive Secretary of
the North American Conference on British Studies (NACBS). Having just
begun my duties, I thought it might be useful if I let fellow Internet
users know how to reach me by e-mail. My local address, as you probably
can recover from this message is: dsacks@reed.edu. I can also be reached
at Reed College by phone at 503-771-1112, ext. 7334 and by fax at
503-777-7769.
I also want to take the opportunity to announce the 1995
competitions for the NACBS's three publication prizes and its two
fellowships for graduate students. All of them have April 1, 1995
submission deadlines. The book prizes are the BRITISH COUNCIL PRIZE IN
THE HUMANITIES of $1000 (for the best book published anywhere in 1993 or
1994 by a North American scholar in any aspect of British studies dealing
with the nineteenth and twentieth centuries) and the JOHN BEN SNOW
FOUNDATION PRIZE of $1000 (for the best book published anywhere in 1994 by
a North American scholar in any field of British studies dealing with the
period from the Middle Ages through the eighteenth century). In addition,
there is the WALTER D. LOVE PRIZE IN HISTORY of $150 (for the best article
or paper of similar length or scope published in 1994 by a North American
scholar in the field of British history). The two fellowship competitions
are the HUNTINGTON LIBRARY FELLOWSHIP of $1800 (to aid in dissertation
research at the Huntington Library and the NACBS DISSERTATION YEAR
FELLOWSHIP of $4000 (to support dissertation research in the British Isles
on any topic in British history, including Scottish, Irish and Imperial
history). In a series of separate messages devoted to the particular
prizes and fellowships, I shall supply further details of each of these
competitions, including submission and application procedures. But I
thought it would be useful now to let H-ALBION subscribers know to keep
an eye out for them over the next day or two.
Sincerely yours,
David Harris Sacks
