I wonder if this might not refer to the anomalous situation of married
men who by some quirk or other ended up with holy orders recognised by
the Roman Catholic church. Was there not a split among conservative
Lutherans earlier this century which involved a number of married Lutheran
pastors converting to Catholicism, having their holy orders recognised by
the Vatican, but retaining their wives? I certainly remember a t.v.
interview in the 1980s with a married Anglican clergyman who converted to
Catholicism in the 1930s (I think), whose orders were finally
being recognised by the Vatican.
