The book Jamie Bronstein was thinking of was, _Wigan Pier Revisited_, by
Beatrice Campbell, which is very good indeed (but don't let the students
know about Bea Campbell's politics - gender and conventional - until they
have agreed, as they will, that she is a great writer and has the truth
in her!). The only addition I would venture to the excellent
suggestions put forward by Sean Farrell Moran and others would be: A.
Sillitoe, _The Loneliness of the Long Distance Runner_.
