History: Eastern Europe/Russia. California State University,
Chico invites applications for a tenure track position at the
assistant professor level in nineteenth and twentieth century
eastern European/Russian history to begin in August 1996.
Preferred concentrations are in the history of science and
technology or in gender/women. Ph.D. required. Salary
competitive. Candidates should demonstrate promise of being
dynamic classroom teachers, excellence in scholarship, and
being a program builder. Will be expected to teach
introductory courses as well as upper division and graduate

25) Public History/Liberal Studies (revised)--U. Of Washington (Tacoma)

The University of Washington, Tacoma (established fall 1990) is a rapidly
growing state-supported institution that offers an innovative
upper-division undergraduate curriculum in Liberal Studies, Nursing, and
Business, a teacher certification program and Master's degree programs in
education and nursing.

The campus is located in the heart of a revitalized urban core that
includes the new Washington State History Museum. We seek a public
historian who can thrive and build a program in such promising
surroundings. Duties include teaching upper-division undergraduate public
history courses and directing internships, building institutional ties and
working with varied community groups (labor, military, business, ethnic,
etc.) and teaching in our multicultural interdisciplinary Liberal Studies
Program. We seek candidates who will have their PhDs by the time of
employment, hands-on experience in public history (preferably with an
urban focus ranging from architectural history to urban geography to
public policy studies). This is a tenure-track, assistant professorship,
pending budgetary approval. We will conduct interviews in April at the
National Council on Public History meeting in Seattle. Appointment
effective September 16, 1996. We are building a diverse, multicultural
faculty and staff strongly encourage women and members of ethnic

34) Postdoctoral Research Associates--Georgetown U. (DC)

The Center for German and European Studies of Georgetown University's
School of Foreign Service will sponsor two research associates for
the 1996-97 academic year. Applications are invited from qualified
young scholars who are U.S. citizens or permanent residents, and
whose academic interests focus upon 19th- and 20th-century German, or
German and European topics dealing with politics, society, economics,
history, literature, or culture. Applicants may be postdoctorates or
tenure-track faculty and should be working on research projects that
will result in significant scholarly publications. Georgetown Ph.Ds
should have taught or conducted research elsewhere for at least two
years prior to application. A grant of $30,000 for the academic year
will be awarded each research associate. Contributory health
insurance is available. Tenure-track faculty may also receive
