As a current job-seeker with a degree from King's College, University of
London, in British military history, I can comment on Dr. Fahey's
suggestion. It has been my experience that the British degree has no
special aura that attracts jobs, and the lack of a minor and the
comparative lack of mentors has hurt me in my searches. As the British
doctorate I was awarded was based solely on research and without
supporting courses, selling myself without a sub-specialty is difficult.
I would recommend going to a UK school only with strong reservations--the
research material is great without a doubt, but the job search afterward
is very hard.
