I have read the communications about doctoral programs in British
history with interest. My comment is directed to graduate students
preparing for a teaching career, particularly those who may now be having
second thoughts about the job market. Last year twelve of our students
(in all areas) were seeking jobs. Of these, ten were successful--eight at
four-year colleges and universities, two at community colleges. The other
two students had substantive interviews; one of these currently has a
part-time teaching position. From a different perspective, in the past
three years Florida State has hired (or is in the process of hiring) five
tenure-track faculty (one in British history) and two non-tenure-track
faculty, one on a three-year appointment and the other on a one-year
appointment. Best wishes, then, to graduate students wherever you are.
