I am mildy surprised that nobody has suggested doctoral work in the British
Isles where resources in British history are considerable. Is it impractical
for a North American who plans to teach in the United States or Canada where
the hiring institutions have non-British expectations about curriculum, teach-
ing methods, and job dossier paperwork?
Second, I am curious what the ratio of advertised "permanent" jobs in British
history to the number of people receiving new degrees in British history is in
the United Kingdom? I suspect it is far more dismal than the situation in N.
America.
