There have now been a succession of postings regarding graduate
schools in modern British history. I'll certainly put in a plug for
my degree-granting institution, Yale, particularly if one factors
into the equation the strength of the university library. But more
seriously, there was a lengthy discussion on this list earlier this
fall about sending students on to do graduate work in this bleak job
market. By my count, there are all of five tenure-track job searches in
modern British history (plus a 2-year post-doc at Cal Tech). There
must be close to one hundred times that number of candidates who will
be applying. Those are tough odds. So at the risk of excoriation by
my colleagues: Maybe the Ohio Board of Regents did the right thing
in scrapping all the graduate history programs except for Ohio
State.
