Try Fay Weldon, _The Heart of the Country_, a short satrical novel set in
1980's Britain. I've used it for lower division g.e. literature courses
successfully, where I've contrasted it with Austen's _Emma_, but it could
work on its own. By the way, I saw a terrific video production of _Heart
of the Country_ on public TV several years ago, but have never been able
to find a copy of it--does anyone know of a source for it?
