I am researching the capture at sea and imprisonment of Henry
Laurens in the Tower of London (1780-1781), and have exhausted the
materials available to me in our library.
Can anyone suggest sources I can use to identify: 1. British naval
officers and their ships at St. John's Newfoundland in August/September
1780; 2. physicians active in London in 1780-1781; 3. officials at the
Tower of London in 1780-1781 (John Gore, Deputy Lieutenant; David
Kinghorne, Gentleman Jailor; Major Parr; and warders James Futerell and
Richard Cooper). I am in search of minimal biographical information, as I
am particularly in their connection to the Tower.
I would also like to discover where Laurens lived when he was in
the Tower. He may have been in the housing assigned to James Futerell.
Newspapers reported that he was in the rooms lived in by John Wilkes, but I
have not yet identified that space either.
Any suggestions for sources will be greatly appreciated.
