John Pickstone of Manchester assembled a team that calendared medical
records in the Manchester Region. See Liz Coyne, Dennis
Coyle and John Pickstone, -Guide to the Records of Health
Services in the Manchester Region-, published by the Dept. of History of
Science and Technology at Univ. of Manchester Inst. of Science and
Technology in 1981. I don't know if copies of this are still available.
Part One, Hospital Services, includes workhouse records. I know of no
similar and equally complete lists for other regions, but it would be a
good idea to write the county record offices for the areas you are
interested in. Record office guides often include listings of hospital
and workhouse papers.
