Luc Borot asked about the English Civil War Society and how to make
contact with it. I have a friend who has been active in it for years -
on the Parliamentary side, unfortunately (!) - who I will ask to
contact him with further details. In the meantime, I'd like to agree
with him in his suspicion that society members do put on a good show,
full of historical information (in which they also explain the role of
the flag-waver, for instance, or re-enact authenticated attempts to
bribe certain officers). They then fight the battle in full uniform
before spending the rest of the weekend in the pub...
Anyway, this year they will also fight some battles in Ireland to
commemorate the various anniversaries there. Apparently, Cork was
cordial, though one wonders if Drogheda's tourist board will wish to
involve itself... which all goes to show the power of history.
