May I add a comment on Edinburgh University Press. My impression was always
that while the Press had prestige, it lacked distribution and promotion--in
journals, bookshops etc. I have just had a book published by them (1995)
and can confirm that this impression is correct. In Edinburgh bookshops,
EUP do well, as one might think, but beyond that they have almost no
presence whatsoever. They have a marketing dept, apparently, but I am very
disappointed with them. I would advise authors to shop around--CUP,OUP are
certainly better. B&W are a small outfit but hungry for business I would
say (based in Edinburgh too). If anyone does consider EUP my advice would
be to discuss promotion before signing any contracts. What notices will EUP
place in newspapers, for example. The recent Times Literary Supplement on
Scottish History has no adverts at all from EUP but does carry ads from
other Scottish publishers.
Hope this helps.
