John Murray II began his publishing house's extraordinarily successful
series of guidebooks with Mariana Starke's *Guide for Travellers on the
Continent* (1820), many of them written by his son, John Murray III.

One helpful recent source for such information is James Buzard's *The Beaten
Track: European Tourism, Literature, and the Ways to Culture, 1800-1918*
(1993). Also good for background is Jeremy Black, *The British Abroad: The
Grand Tour in the 18th Century* (1992).
