CCTA TO CONDUCT A SURVEY OF UK INFORMATION SUPERHIGHWAY PROJECTS
CCTA, the Government Centre for Information Systems, is conducting a
survey of Information Superhighways projects being developed in the
UK. The survey, part of a larger Information Superhighway Initiative,
aims to provide application developers and users with information
about electronic information services. Some 5000 firms and government
departments will be approached to provide details of projects.
The results of the survey, to be made publicly available mid 1995,
will allow an assessment of development trends to be made. Information
collected will allow an exchange of best practice, coordination of
similar project developments, and a database which will act as a
catalogue of existing applications.
The Information Superhighway - in reality the link between computers
and telecommunications systems - promises to change the way in which
information is collected, stored and disseminated. The European Union
believes that Information Superhighway projects (in Euro-speak,
Telematic Projects) have the potential to increase economic growth by
up to 2% per annum. CCTA, the Government Centre for Information
Systems, believes the survey will provide a stimulus to the
development and use of Information Superhighway services in the UK.
Mark Gladwyn, Head of Strategic Programmes Division at CCTA said the
Information Revolution is well established in the UK, as a result of a
wide range of developments over the past decade. CCTA is ahead of our
European partners and is competing well with development in the USA
and Japan. The consultation process which we began on 21 November has
now moved on with the emergence and development of the Collaborative
Open Groups qisp@tag.co.uk.
