A graduate student of mine who is writing a paper for me (in a legal
history course) on the legal issues involved in the muder of Becket
tells me that--as part of Henry II's settlement with the Pope--the
knights were turned over to the latter for punishment. However, the
Pope took no action against them because they had only been doing their feudal
duty. I don't have a source yet but can get it for you if you need it.
