Industrialisation and urbanisation are often seen as twin elements of
modernisation, the two processes occurring in tandem with a strong causal link
running between them. With the emergence of a 'gradualist' view of English
economic development, urbanisation is increasingly labelled as the dependent
variable, with industrial change leading to growth or decline in individual
towns and the urban sector as a whole. The association between urban and
industrial development has much to do with traditional interpretations of the
English experience of the two processes. By looking further afield (into
Europe and beyond) and by studying more closely the regional trends seen within
England, this session seeks to examine the universality of this relationship
and explore the causal links between these two pillars of economic and social
development ...
Papers are invited on any aspect of the relationship between industrial and
urban change, but those looking at non-English developments and/or taking a
systematic approach are particularly welcome.
