There is a largely forgotten classic scripted by Noel Coward, CAVALCADE, which
received the Academy Award for Best Picture in 1933. It recounts the lives of
two families (a la "Upstairs, Downstairs") from the Boer War to c. 1930. It
hassome wonderful things in it, although it does get a trifle maudlin at times.
For the impact of the First World War, I like A MONTH IN THE COUNTRY (based on
J.L. Carr's haunting novel). It stars Colin Firth, Kenneth Branagh, and
NatashaRichardson. It is available from Warner Home Video.
