Research interests: Victorian England. I'm in the process of finishing a
literature/cultural studies dissertation on how political and social
events influenced the structure of Dickens' novels. To get at this
influence, I look at violent incidents in the novels and examine them not
just as moments where incompatible characters are having a disagreement,
but as nodes where the various discourses (Newgate, historical, romantic,
domestic, professional) for which these characters act as emissaries are
working out a larger social struggle.
