1) Position: British History
Institution: University of Leeds
HISTORY - Full-time post; to teach a range of courses with specialism
in Nineteenth-Century History, and preferably the Victorian Period.
RESPONSIBILITIES OF THE POST
In addition to teaching requirements, a specialist in
nineteenth-century history (preferably in Victorian Studies)
is needed to support the History Department's initiatives in
enhancing its research profile and in developing the recently
established Leeds Centre for Victorian Studies.
The precise teaching requirements will depend upon the
particular expertise of the successful applicant and the needs
of the Department as the modular structure is progressively
developed.
At present, it is envisaged that in Semester 1 (12 weeks of
teaching) the successful applicant will co-ordinate and teach
the Sources and their Use module (L{evel} 1), s/he will teach
a Survey option (L.2), and an option (L.3) in International
(i.e. non-British) History (possibly in the Victorian Period).
In Semester 2 (8 wks teaching for L.1 and L.2 and 12 Wks for
L.3) s/he will offer options in Sources and Their Use (L.1),
in Historiography (L.1) and, possibly, in Exploration-in-Depth
(L.2) modules. S/he will teach the Dissertation Skills module
(L.2), and an option (L.3) in International (i.e. non-British
History (possibly in the Victorian Period). S/he will co-
ordinate the Dissertation option module (L.3) and will
supervise some dissertations.
The M.A. in Victorian Studies is an interdisciplinary
modular course with modules being offered which draw on staff
expertise. Modules normally comprise six two-hour sessions.
The successful applicant will be expected to contribute to the
M.A. course and will assume some of the administrative
responsibilities for the M.A. S/he will have the opportunity
to supervise research degree students.
The successful candidate will take a leading role in
developing the Leeds Centre for Victorian Studies and in
organising the colloquia and conference programme.
The post-holder will be involved in School and Departmental
activities including attachments, admissions, open days, and
pastoral care.
QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE REQUIRED
The successful applicant will be a specialist in nineteenth-
century history, probably in the Victorian period.
The successful applicant will hold, or will be completing, a
Ph.D.; will be research active; and will have work already
published or in preparation for publication.
The successful applicant must have experience of teaching in
a Higher Education Institution, of organising courses, and of
teaching large groups. Experience of teaching in other
periods, in addition to the nineteenth century, would be an
advantage.

Truckee Meadows Community College (TMCC) is a comprehensive
community college with a student enrollment of 9000+ (3350
FTE). TMCC is one of seven member institutions within the
University and Community College System of Nevada (UCCSN) and
is located in the Sierra Nevada foothills overlooking the City
of Reno.

The Center for Electronic Texts in the Humanities (CETH) is seeking a
humanities computing specialist. Please see the position description below.

HUMANITIES COMPUTING SPECIALIST
Center for Electronic Texts in the Humanities
RESPONSIBILITIES: Develops and maintains information services for
Center, including World Wide Web Server, newsletter, and planned series
of guides to electronic text resources and applications. Provides
research support for humanities computing and electronic texts on a
national basis. Gives presentations and seminars on electronic texts
in the humanities. Coordinates electronic text center at Rutgers
University including supervision of student assistants. Assists
participants at CETH Summer Seminar.
QUALIFICATIONS: Strong background in the humanities with PhD
preferred. Experience with computer applications in humanities
research required, with at least two years preferred. Reading
knowledge of some foreign languages preferred. Knowledge of TEI SGML
and experience with Internet, PCs (DOS and Windows), Macintosh and Unix
preferred. Good oral and written communication skills required.
SALARY: Negotiable, dependent upon experience and qualifications,
for a grant funded appointment equivalent to assistant professor rank;
possibility of renewal.
STATUS/BENEFITS: Faculty status, non-tenure track, calendar year
appointment, TIAA/CREF pension, life/health insurance, prescription

CENTER PROFILE: The Center for Electronic Texts in the Humanities
(CETH) is sponsored jointly by Rutgers, the State University of New
Jersey and Princeton University. The Center's administrative
headquarters are located in the Archibald Stevens Alexander Library,
the main humanities and social sciences research library of Rutgers on
the College Avenue Campus in New Brunswick, New Jersey. CETH acts as a
national focus for the creation, dissemination and use of electronic
texts in the humanities with emphasis on scholarly applications and
primary source materials. CETH's activities include an Inventory of
Electronic Texts in the Humanities, research into methods of providing
Internet access to collections of SGML-encoded material in the
humanities, an international summer seminar on methods and tools for
electronic texts in the humanities and general information services for
humanities computing. CETH is also developing associated projects in
partnership with other institutions and research groups. A consortium
of member institutions is planned to start in July 1995. CETH is
supported in part by the National Endowment for the Humanities and the
Andrew W. Mellon Foundation.
