Early Modern Britain -- A Bibliography

Sears McGee Fall 1994

The categories below are the obvious ones, and not all books fit neatly in them. Martin Ingram's book on the church courts, for example, is both local and social history. I have placed books dealing with more than one of the chronological periods in the one where most of the book falls, but this does not mean that they do not have important material on another period (e.g., Haigh, English Reformations, Watt, Cheap Print and Popular Piety, Coleman and Starkey, Revolution Reassessed). An asterisk indicates that a paperback edition does or at least has at one time been available.

I recognize that the list is highly anglocentric and more attention should be given to Wales, Scotland and Ireland. I hope to address this problem in the future and will appreciate your advice as to the best items to add.
