Boston University
Founded in 1953, the African Studies Program of Boston University is a National Resource
Center for African Languages and African Studies. The web site details the center's
programs, courses, and titles of publications. Some videos are loaned to the general
public, courtesy of the Outreach Program.
Central Connecticut State University
A valuable web site for its Africa Update series, it also has hyperlinks to
important Africa-related topics, search engines, people finders, and Haines Brown's World
History Archive--Southern Africa.
Centre for the Study of African Economies
This University of Oxford web site describes the Centre's activities and provides a short
topics list of hyperlinks that connects to journals, libraries, data resources, and
organizations.

Columbia University
An excellent web site maintained by Joseph Caruso, this academic home page lists African
Studies subjects by electronic journals and newspapers, African regions, organizations,

This web site discusses the holdings of the John Henrik Clarke Africana Library and
provides hyperlinks to major African Studies Internet sites.
East Carolina University
Maintains a helpful list somewhat mirrored to H-Africa's that lists African studies
programs and Africana archives.
Harvard University
Maintained by the Harvard Committee on African Studies, this site has hyperlinks to
African news sources, on-line libraries, and a variety of Africa-related organizations.
Indiana University
Public school teachers may borrow outreach kits free of charge from this web site. On-line
grant information is also available.
International African Institute
Founded in 1926 to facilitate communication between Africanists worldwide, the
London-based IAI publishes scholarly works, assists museum projects in West Africa, and
distributes Africana publications to African universities.
Kyoto University
This web site examines African Studies in Japan and lists important Africana Internet
sites in various categories including search engines on Africana and anthropology.
Leiden, The Netherlands
Leiden's Afrika-Studiecentrum was founded in 1947 and is the leading Africanist research
and documentation institute in the Netherlands. Some 25 researchers specialize in
anthropology, sociology, geography, economics, and law.
Michigan State University
MSU's program focuses on the diverse and extensive activities of the Center's 130
Africanist faculty and directs several valuable programs, including the African Media Program,
the Program on the Lakes
of East Africa, and the definitive national listing of all US undergraduate programs
for study in Africa, the National Consortium for
Study in Africa. MSU's African studies program has the largest faculty and offers more
languages than any other program in the US.
Nordic Africa Institute, Uppsala,
Sweden
Founded in 1962 and sponsored by 5 Nordic countries, the Nordic Africa Institute promotes
scientific research on Africa. Reseach activities, seminars, and scholarships are some of
home page listings.
Northwestern University
The largest Africana library in the world, the Melville J. Herskovits Library, is
described here. The library's home page includes on-line samples from its poster collection. Northwestern
also is supports several widely recognized African research and exchange programs.
The Schomburg Center
for Research in Black Culture
Associated with New York Public Library, The Schomburg Center is a rich archive of
Africana materials and the African diaspora. Hyperlinks are divided into country and
subject divisions. An innovative, clickable Peters-based map assists searches.
School of Oriental and African Studies
The SOAS is part of the Federal University of London system. This web site lists its
degree programs, courses of study, library holdings, and staff.
Stanford University
Karen Fung's fine work for the Electronic Technology Group of the African Studies
Association is evident here. This splendid Stanford-based site is conveniently divided
into "Topics" (some 30) and "Regions" (about 9). The regions of Africa
are those south of the Sahara. If you want annotated hyperlinks, this is one of your most
important resources. In addition to the older Berkeley-Stanford African Studies site above
and Karen Fung's web site here, Stanford archives a third important electronic resource, Center for African Studies, which
describes Stanford's African Studies Program housed in the Littlefield Center.

University of California at Berkeley
Established in 1979, Berkeley's Center for African Studies is described here. It
emphasizes contemporary African issues and interdisciplinary research.
University of California at Los Angeles
The James S. Coleman African Studies Center, founded in 1959, is one of the National
Resource Centers for African Studies. It promotes outreach, academic, and research
programs.
University of Cambridge
Edited by Alice Owens, this web page lists African Studies events and describes the
linkages between the University of Cambridge and Africa dating to the 1780s.
University of Florida
The web site of the Center for African Studies at the University of Florida descibes its
programs. They include outreach, research, and African art holdings in the Samual P. Harn
Museum.
University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign
The Center for African Studies employs an attractive site that lists hyperlinks in such
categories as human rights, grants and scholarships, and jobs in Africa. The Center's
outreach programs to K-12 public school teachers is a valuable resource. The site is also
home for the Council for the Development of Social Science Research in Africa (Dakar,
Senegal) and the multi-publisher African Books Collective (Oxford, England).
University of Iowa
This web site, under the auspices of the Center for International and Comparative Studies
at the University of Iowa, explains degree programs and discusses the Ford Foundation
grants of the African Studies Program. Rather hidden away is this web site's jewel, a
splendid on-line version of a CD-ROM project, "Art
and Life in Africa".
University of Kansas
The Office of African and African-American Studies lists courses and hyperlinks at this
web site. The program provides a home page for MAAAS, the Mid-America Alliance
for African Studies, an Africanist regional group that shares outreach ideas and
resources.
University of Michigan
Established in 1970, the Center for Afroamerican and African Studies is multi-disciplinary
and inter-departmental. The program's prizes, fellowships, and courses are listed.
University of Pennsylvania
Here is a pre-eminent web site for African Studies. Ali B. Ali-Dinar's web site contains
vast resources, is easy to use, and appears aesthetically pleasing. The site is supported
by the African Studies Program of the University of Pennsylvania. Like the Stanford and
Wisconsin sites, this home page contains a wealth of K-12 materials. The web site is also
home to the African Studies Association. Be sure to review the New Sites of

University of Wisconsin at
Madison
Founded in 1962, the interdisciplinary African Studies Program of the University of
Wisconsin, comprised of some 25 departments, has made fundamental contributions to the
fields of oral literature, folklore, history, political science, and outreach programs.
This site contains several K-12 collections of resources--some of the best on the
Internet.
Warsaw University
The center for African Studies in Poland is located in the Department of African Languages
and Cultures, the Institute of Oriental Studies, Warsaw University. This web site
identifies the staff, publications, and the history of African Studies at the Institute.
