African Culture in African-American Religion: Denomnational Cultures of the Black Churches

From: Jim Spickard, University of Redlands Date sent: Mon, 11 Dec 1995 crossposted from H-AMREL@msu.edu

I shall be organizing two sessions on African-American religion at the 1996 Annual Meeting of the Religious Research Association, which meets in Nashville, TN, from November 8-10 next year. The overall conference theme is Denominational Cultures. I am looking for papers on these two topics:

The first emphasizes African, Africanist, crypto-African, etc. elements in various African-American religions. This could include rites, theologies, histories, etc; I am casting a wide net.

The second emphasizes the folkways and styles of life that differentiate various Black churches/sects/denominations: both from each other and from the White churches.

I welcome papers from any discipline, though those with some sociological or anthropological focus are especially encouraged.

Please send abstracts to me by February 29th, 1996. You may either send these to my sabbatical address or to my e-mail address, both of which are below.
