Here is a Web site, on the African diaspora, that H-World subscribers might care to look at:

http://www.afrinet.net/~griot/

What is a Griot?

[Image] A Griot (gree'-oh) is an African historian. He is a revered clan member who, before the written word, would memorize all of a village's significant events, like births, death, marriages, hunts, seasons and wars, ensuring that the collective heritage, culture and lineage of the clan continued. A Griot would speak for hours, even days, drawing upon a practiced and memorized history, that had been passed on from Griot to Griot for generations.

In the Griot tradition, the people of the AFROAM-L discussion group have created a unique compilation of discussions, research and original work about African life, culture and history named it our Griot Online.

Diaspora

This first issue of Griot Online is a collection of resources about the African Diaspora: the scattering of African descendants to the New World and Europe via the Atlantic slave trade and colonization. The Diaspora refers to the existence of African descendants around the world. To fully explore this topic, we present maps, narrative, pictures and a timeline. The continent of Africa, and specifically West Africa, is a common history and background of millions of Black people throughout the Caribbean, South America and North America. The better we understand this common history, the better we understand ourselves today.
