May I also suggest the following:
Ousmane Sembene-"Camp de Thiaroye"
Med Hondo -"Sarraounia"
Ousmane Sembene-"Emitai"
Claire Denis -"Chocolate"
The first three are constructed around actual historical incidents.
Med Hondo"s Sarraounia focuses on the resistance of the Aznas of
Niger against 19th century expansionism. Ousmane Sembene focuses on
French colonial brutality in the 1940"s against the tirailleurs
senegalaises. In "Chocolate" the plot is fictional, but it is set in
colonial Cameroon. They all have English subtitles. "Camp de
Thiaroye" and "Chocolate" seem to be the favourite of students. Drop
a line and let me know what your students tend to prefer.
