H-AFRICA wants to undertake a program of book reviewing. We hope to
cut a year or so off the time spent in having new materials
criticized. We will, in some cases, undertake multiple reviews
and/or encourage rejoinders by the authors and others; on occasion
these reviews may also be cross-posted to other H-NET lists. Our
anticipation is the reviews will provide a basis for general
conversation of scholarly and substantive issues.

We seek your assistance in this new endeavor and ask for volunteer
reviewers. First, send us a message with your name, mailing address,
and your area(s) of critical interest. Second, if there are books
you wish to review NOW, provide us with a full reference, including
publisher and ISBN number. From time to time, we shall also list
books as they arrive at the H-NET office at MSU; if you are
interested in reviewing any of these, please let us know.

If you undertake a review for H-AFRICA, we shall expect to have it
within one month of your receipt of the book; we want to stress that
speed is of the essence. Likewise, if you are an author (or
publisher) who has a book which you would like considered for review,
please contact us as early as possible, even before final
publication. Finally, if you are an author who feels that your book
was unfairly reviewed somewhere, feel free to offer us a scholarly
and reasoned rebuttal.

Harold Marcus at MSU will have primary responsibility for the
H-AFRICA book review service.
