Swahili Dictionary News -- May 18, 1995
We would like to pass along some news about the Internet Living Swahili
Dictionary.
We now have a functioning homepage on the World Wide Web. Point your Web
browser to our URL: http://www.cis.yale.edu/swahili
We have received a grant from the Consortium on Language Teaching and Learning
to expand the project in several exciting directions.
1) We will have several graduate students, including 3 from East Africa,
working full time on dictionary development throughout the summer.
Starting June 1, expect the Kamusi Project to switch from its current
sedate pace (managed by one part-time stude nt), instead beginning to move
at warp speed.
2) We will be preparing several different types of Swahili reference
materials. We will produce a print learners' dictionary by the end of the
summer. We will also be working on a CD-ROM that will include sound files
for every entry, as well as many ima ges. In addition, we will be
developing the WWW page into an on-line searchable dictionary, and we plan
to add the sound files to this dictionary as well.
3) The grant includes provisions to continue dictionary development
throughout the academic year, though not at the fevered pitch we plan for
the summer.
Finally, we are still working on the Windows executable program that we
will be able to distribute through an FTP site under our WWW page. We
will, of course, post an announcement when this software is available. We
are also trying to post an update of the (now outdated) current dictionary
database, and we will announce it as soon as it is available.
