Ethnicity in Africa:
Roots, Meanings and Implications

The Centre of African Studies is holding its next annual conference on the
topical theme of 'Ethnicity in Africa'. This will consist of two separate
events which will follow on one from the other. The first is a
one-and-a-half day conference, covering Africa as a whole, to be held all
day Wednesday 24th and the morning of Thursday 25th May, 1995. It will be
followed by a one-and-a-half day workshop, dealing specifically with Ghana,
on the afternoon of 25th May and on Friday 26th May.

The conference is interdisciplinary by design and will involve
participation by specialists in Law, Anthropology, History, Literature,
Linguistics, Education, Politics and Development Studies. We are also
inviting papers from senior media correspondents in Africa. The conference
will cover issues such as the colonial construction of 'tribes'; ethnicity
and trading diasporas; the moral economy of ethnicity; language policy and
the national question in contemporary Africa.

Space at the Ghana workshop is strictly limited and will be allocated on a
first-come-first served basis.

Nugent, History; Professor Kenneth King, African Studies; Dr Louise de la
Gorgendiere, Social Anthropology;
