I am enjoying the many comments on books and materials for teaching
African history. It is always helpful to me to learn of the
exeperience of other teachers in using various texts, readers,
novels, document collections, and the like. I especially am pleased
to have some sense of student reactions. However, in my own
experience such student reactions to--and abilities to use and
benefit from--particular texts varies with the level of the student
groups.
For example, I teach African history courses at the introductory
(freshman through junior), advanved (junior and/or senior), and
graduate levels. Books I would use at one level are often not
appropriate at another. It would particularly helpful--to me at
least--to have some indication of class level in such discussions.
Thanks!
