There are several versions of the word: elsewhere you will hear the
variation "mivumba" being used. Generally it refers to secondhand
clothing imported and sold in markets, etc. The type of secondhand
clothing sold in East Africa tends not only to be quite worn out and
most have a mouldy smell. Other words used are `katuna' refering to
the trading post on the Rwanda/Uganda border where most traders got
their stock from; or `kunkumula' as used in Uganda.
