Edward Said's works on *Orientalism* and *Culture and Imperialism*
were written with questions like this in mind. In reaction to rejection of
the impress of European and American economies and cultures in the Muslim
world (of which this kind of divergence can easily become a part), the
Muslim world is vilified by academic-politicos as creating culture wars
(The Clash of Civilizations).
Rather than fall into such a situation, this discussion about terminology is
actually pretty important. The notion of inputing the view of those studied
into our discussion of valid categories of such study isn't new, but needs to
be resurrected every so often to freshen our contact with their reality.
