There are two books by David Roediger, the Americanist social
historian (who is married to someone who may in fact be on this
net!). His first and best known is, *The Wages of Whiteness: Race
and the Making of the American Working Class.* A second book is a
collection of essays. In addition, in his brand new book, Vivian
Bickford-Smith discusses the making of white Englishness in Cape
Town, South Africa.

But it is an underexplored topic, somewhat like the "male" category
in gender studies. You might see the the review article on Roediger,
from which I got my first info, in the *Journal of African Studies*,
20. 4 (Dec. 1994), pp. 663-9, by J. Krikler.
