HISTORIANS ON THE INTERNET: H-NET DISCUSSION LISTS
GET-ACQUAINTED SESSIONS
During the Congress, you are invited to attend get-acquainted
sessions about H-Net, the historians' scholarly network.
Historians daily use the Internet to converse, make announcements,
discuss issues, share information and learn from one another's
experiences in a scholarly environment. This is made possible by
H-Net, a network of discussion lists on a broad variety of subjects,
defined by period, area, or topic.
Each discussion group, or "list," is moderated by specialists and
the exchanges that take place on the list are governed by rules
defined by an editorial board. Thus the exchanges are more in the
nature of a running seminar than of common-room banter.
Among the valuable offerings of the lists are book reviews,
discussions about sources and methods, bibliographical suggestions,
and shared teaching experiences. The discussions go on daily and the
exchanges are stored electronically for selective retrieval on
particular topics.
The get-acquainted sessions will be hosted by discussion list
moderators who will explain the nature and structure of H-Net,
outline the lists' editorial policies, and share their experience
with this new forum for historical scholarly discussion.
