With regard to Isabirye's frsutrations over job applications:
Often and very regretably, institutions advertising positions will
not respond specifically until they have made an appointment; and
if you have not made any of the cuts, there is often a long delay
between application and learning of the decision. While one can of
course not discount any of the many factors that comprise
decision-making, I suspect that probably more whites than blacks
learn of the decision after months of waiting.
There are many reasons why people do not get jobs, and they stem from
state and topic of dissertation, quality of the doctoral program at
the PhD-granting institution, the renown of those writing letters of
recommendation, the internal criteria set by the hiring department,
and various idiosyncratic factors over which nobody can have any
control, racism both for and against blacks among them.
