As for analytic studies of colonial rule, I have used Betsy Schmidt's
*Peasants, Traders, and Wives* in a seminar. It nicely breaks down the
monolithic opposition Europeans/Africans and also makes students follow
change within colonial policy. On the other hand, it doesn't quite meet
your criterion for provoking debate, since students may not feel they can
have an independent opinion.
