I write both to introduce myself and to make two queries. My name is
Melissa Nobles, and I am a (soon to be) assistant professor of
Political Science at M.I.T. My dissertation, entitled: "Responding
with Good Sense: The Politics of Race and Censuses in Contemporary
Brazil" examines the past and present policies of the Brazilian
Census Bureau (IBGE) and the organized attempts to challenge IBGE
methods and interpretations. While my project takes Brazil as its
principal case study, it is also broadly comparative in scope.

My queries are the following: first, has anyone taught a graduate
level seminar on the comparative politics of race and ethnicity? I am
currently designing such a course and would like to see what has been
or is being taught. Second, does anyone have any cites on
racial/ethnic categorization in places other than the U.S.? I am
especially interested in gathering more information on India, Great
Britain, South Africa, and Australia, but information on any country
is welcomed.
