Perhaps an eccentric view of African history merits firm expression
here. I have always been uncomfortable about the place of the
Livingstones and the Schweitzers. Although I respect him for
educating his compatriots about another existence on this planet, I
have litle respect for the self-righteous arrogance with which he
decided to "discover" and "name" African geographical landmarks to
which he was taken by his "native load-bearers" possibly lying in a
hammock and smoking a pipe. I presume we are not going to ignore the
fact that the "natives" who may have taken Livingstone (the
tourist) to their landmarks may well have had names for all these
places. Schweitzer is another case... More soon.
