(x-post from nyasanet, not an H-Net list)

I was surfing the internet and saw a list of 100 great African heros
posted from the University of Florida. Somewhere around 1/3 down
the list I saw the name "Kamuzu Banda". What exactly does greatness
mean and where does it start/end? At first i thought this guy was
insulting Malawians by including Banda's name on the list and I told
him so. Afterwards, I wondered if I should have reacted the way I
did, Besides, how do I know that's how Nyasas would feel, after all
Banda still leads a non-trivial political party with close to a third
of the seats in parliament?

The article was posted to soc.culture.african - the thread has been
around for a while with some angry at the inclusion of people like de
Klerk on the list of great african heros - there's some book out that
has this list.
