I have also found Shillington to be very useful with supplements. In
my course I use material on ancient Egypt and Nubia - John Taylor's
*Egypt and Nubia* (a British Museum publication and quite good) and
the essay in Connah's *African Civilizations on the Nile Corridor*.
Moving into a discussion of Christianity using selections from
*Tarikh*, Vol 2, No. 1 " Early Christianity in Africa". I also use
other material for example the Epic of Sundiata w/ readings on castes
in Mali, etc. I have also found that students are amazed with George
Brooks' piece on the "Signares of St. Louis" in the *Women in Africa*
book by Bay, I believe. I have other pieces that I can send to you
directly. On the slave trade I had them reqd Equiano's book and some
others.
