Greetings-

I'm attempting to put together a set of readings for a summer
program on South African history held here at the University of
Minnesota. The program is designed for a group of African American
freshmen and sophmores--the idea is to get them interested in the
study of Africa, and to help them to begin work on particular
research project.

The seminar will be organized around four "themes" on South Africa-
"culture", "development", "history" and "environment." Myself and
another grad student are responsible for compiling a set of readings
which introduce these various topics, perhaps by providing relevant
background material (theoretical and factual) and by introducing
possible avenues of further research. As I am an East Africanist,
I'm not too familiar with the available material. Does anyone have
any suggestions? Articles or book selections are relevant, as are
other forms of media, particularly music.

Thanks for your help.
