I need suggestions for a good one-volume surveye of pre-colonial
African history for use in a course I teach: "Africa and the Slave
Trade to 1800." The last time I taught it I used Gailey's volume 1
(Krieger Press) which I found to be rather sterile. (The students
didn't like it either).
For additional readings I am using Basil Davidson's book on the slave
trade and the new Bedford Books edition of Olaudah Equiano's
autobiography. What I need is a good, spirited, relatively short,
one-volume survey giving the students a good intorduction to
pre-colonial sub-Saharan Africa in all its diversity. Is that
available?
Thanks in advance for any ideas. Tom (excuse the typos, my editor
here at home won't allow me to backtrack)
